Resource Available – Ken
For me, this is an interesting post to write. I’ve certainly had times when I kept options open and explored a variety of possible opportunities. And many of my friends and colleagues from my past involvement with the InfoSec community and the unified communications community are well aware that my involvement in the communications industry has been, since 2004, a labor of love with some occasional consulting or writing revenue. In other words, I had a day job in a different business sector.
Last year Sheryl and I relocated to Spokane to accept a senior position with a company that was solid, growing and global. Throughout the process we debated whether we really wanted to live in Spokane, and we don’t. It’s been a fantastic opportunity to work with some radio technologies, and explore GRPS/EDGE/HSPA communications at a deeper level. But as they say, all things pass. On Monday that company began some restructuring and the process of eliminating roles led to people, me included, being laid off. It was quite unexpected.
That means that I’m available, and looking for a new place to hang my hat. A new company to call home. I want to bring my day job back into alignment with our interests, helping lead a growing company to the next generation in unified communications, mobility, networking services, social media and the like.
If you know someone who needs a strong resource, please let them know I’m looking.

Sorry to hear about the lay off. Great to hear that you are moving on to new and greater things that are more in alignment with who you are and what you want! Good luck with it. I wish I had a job for you.
And if you want a marketing communications guy to work alongside you in a nice sunny place by the sea, count me in. We are thinking West Coast would be nice, but they won’t have me without a job!
All the best,
Lewis

Sorry to hear Ken
Guess we’re on the same boat. I got laid off a couple of months ago, also unexpected and due to restructuring, and let’s face it…economy.
I wish my comment was more helpful, but all I can do is send you the best of vibes, and all my best thoughts. I’m sure you’ll find something good, pretty soon.
Hugs to you and Sheryl.

These are interesting times. May things be less interesting soon.
Spokane? What were you thinking. Didn’t you know their fire trucks get stuck in the snow?
The important thing is not to take layoffs personally. You won’t be alone this round either. At best we are in the 5th inning in this game and it isn’t looking good.
Did you apply for the Voxeo position? More will pop up.
I look forward to following your adventure – I suspect it will be a fun ride and interesting conversation.

Lewis – If we ever find a way to work together and collaborate on a daily basis, you had better believe we’ll either have you on the phone or us on a plane. That would be awesome. We’ll certainly keep you posted on what’s going on.
Maria – Thanks sis. It’s a shocker, but we can’t change what happened. Just muddle through.
Dave – Absolutely can’t take it personally, but having been laid of several times in my younger years, the blow still hits hard when it happens. You’re absolutely right about the game not being over. Lots of things ahead I’m sure.
Thanks

Sorry for the news. Its a bad time right now for many people, but talent will always have a place.
We’re in similar situations you and I. I sit here typing this while at the same time sorting through a lifetime of items (a lot of it junk!) trying to figure what to take to Australia and what to leave behind. Will I find work there? Hope so!
But not only are we both facing uncertain times ahead, we have two great women behind us, to drive us, motivate us. Ease some of the stress and worry.
At the end of the day, i have no doubt the both of us will pull through.
Good luck my friend!

Rob,
We hadn’t realized you were moving down under. Now we’re even more sorry we hit LA while you were in Vegas and missed the chance to meet.
Life brings us lots of changes and we never really can know what’s next. What matters is that we do have those loving and supporting women in our lives. Without them, what would really be the point.
I don’t envy you the nig move you have, although that could easily be us if a job somewhere else appears too.
Hang in there my friend. Don’t lose sight of what counts. And do keep in touch. If we get down there for any reason, or you find yourself back around us, one of these days we’re gonna all go have dinner!

Ken,
Sorry to hear you were a casualty of the changes there. Best wishes with whatever comes next! And I’ll help spread the word…

Thanks Dan. That means a lot and I know you’ve shared the firsthand experience.

Shocked and very sorry Ken,
I’ll say some prayers for you and Sheryl. I hope something comes your way quickly. And if you do have to move again, may this be the last one for the next 9 months at least!
Good luck my friend!

Good luck guys, I’m sure you will find something in no time in a much better place than Spokane, perhaps even some place warm.

Hey Ken –
Don’t worry – you won’t be on the market long. My advice is to take this opportunity to get a week’s worth of rest. Maybe two.
In the meantime, keep up the good work on the writing – I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying our dialog. Thank you so much for that.

I just want to add my 2 cents here. I believe in Ken. I also know he’s lucky to have so many friends who support him. We both feel the warmth and concern. It’s so much appreciated and hard to find words for. Ken can find them better than I, so I’ll just say thank you.

I’m not sure I really can find any better words than thank you everyone. You’re examples of why our industry will weather every storm that comes no matter what words we use to describe it.

Ken, your experience, vision and communications skills will not leave you on the market long! There’s always a dearth of those talents.
Good luck in your search. Looking forward to seeing what new adventure awaits you!
