New GeekSpeakTV Episode – What is Social Media
This evening we sat down to talk about what social media is. It seems to mean many different things to different people. We took some time to think about what it means to us and try to give broader definition than we see in most conversations.
In this episode, we also unveiled our new look for the show and new them music. We want to thank our friend Dan Lynch for the great music.
If you haven’t already done so, please also take a minute to go vote in our poll here.

As I finish watching I have a couple of thoughts. I think older chat rooms and bulletin boards are social media. What has changed is how we interact with these various virtual villages.
But what remains the same is that we are meeting, interacting and growing relationships in a completely non-face-to-face encounter. The “new” social media of today just allows us to interact where we want and how we want. RSS, SMS, HTTP, XMPP allows us to pick what method is most convenient for us to follow and converse with the people we find interesting.
The other thought I had was in regard to the idea of following a gazillion people. I can barely follow all the people I follow now. In Robert Scoble’s case, he has found a way to increase his value to a company by trying to maintain this large following he has. So it may be worth his effort to attempt to interact occasionally with them. Obviously most of us are not on the same path and the priority to follow so many others is not there.
I think an ethics is starting to form in my mind as to what I should post and where. I don’t want to be noise on Twitter because I am turned off by so much of the noise. But on Jaiku the conversation makes noise more palatable. And when I have something more to say then FaceBook or one of my blogs is the more appropriate place for that. If people are following me then I hope they are following me in all the right places. That “my noise” catches them by the right method and is convenient for them. Not a nuisance.
Nice conversation Ken and Sheryl. I’m not sure my comment is where you were going but this is where you left me.

Michael I love this! You get to the heart of the matter and really sum things up nicely.
I agree with you. I don’t want to be noise and yet I know for some that’s all I am. It sort of sucks, actually.
With regard to ‘what is social media’, I think again you’re right on the money. Social media is as Ken said, any of these tools we use in conversation with each other. It is jaiku, twitter, facebook and all the old chat rooms as well. Any place there is dialog in technology. Interesting things to think about.
Thanks so much for taking the time to come talk about this. It is really cool to get feedback. ;o)
